Although Whitman’s genre was poetry, not prose, the role and value of nature was, as was true for Emerson and Thoreau, that it serves as a template for how to live a meaningful life. The extent of functional differentiation varies with the productivity of the key function or functions; this is the principle of differentiation. The "anti-class" posture offered by Naess is superficial, ignoring the connection between nature as commodity and woman as commodity in patriarchal society.

A variety of evidence suggests that song structure in Drosophila is controlled genetically and is under strong selective pressure. What's surprising is that the Soviet government was just as protective of game animals as the forests, this despite the revenue-earning possibilities of fur. In some respects his 'green' streak went significantly deeper than Arndt's; presaging certain tendencies in recent environmental activism, his 1853 essay Field and Forest ended with a call to fight for "the rights of wilderness." Every being which is not homogeneous and simple but complex and composite must have in it some organising principle. Deep ecologists (Chapter 4) call for a total transformation in science and worldviews that will replace the mechanistic framework of domination with a ecological framework of interconnectedness and reciprocity.
