By reviewing some of Todorov's characterizations of Fantastical literature, the difference in a Magical Realist text and a Fantastic text is seen more clearly. Martin doesn’t have the guy who’s 6’1” and the guy who’s 6’2”, he has the guy with no lips and the 7-foot-tall giant who can only say the word “Hodor.” By starting with characters who are vastly different from each other, young and old, rich and poor, high class and low class, thieves and noblemen, etc., you not only start your people from very different places, but you help readers remember who is who – especially important if you have a large cast.

Magic Realism is realism that incorporates mysterious or fantastic elements but it still portrays everyday life. These devices, magical realism, masque and symbolism, serve to give the film and the novel a semblance of a mystical world where endless possibilities exist.

Anna Makkonen, on the other hand, devotes more attention to the novel's form by classifying it as poststructuralist, a cross between an artist's self-portrait and a female Bildungsroman. A long list like this is almost always the sign of a poor article. Not only must major events and characters, as well as social conditions, be correctly depicted, but the central characters must not be anachronisms. We believe this so strongly that a world view in which emotion can kill won't convince us---we'll write it off as fantasy.

Hang out with Alon on Google+ As I mentioned last week, I am work-shopping a magical realism novel to my fearless writer’s group. Soft Sci Fi as defined here is Science Fiction, Science Fantasy, or (to use George Lucas' term) Space Fantasy, in which there is little or no attempt to keep the science and tech plausible, or to have social trends follow logically from technological development. This intriguing novel could be classified as contemporary fiction with an embedded paranormal thriller but I prefer to think of it as a form of metafiction; after all, it’s a story about a writer beginning to sort out her emerging identity by writing a story about a young woman doing the same–just with death gods and ghosts.
