Q: Doesn’t this mean that most wire–strung harps are stuck in one key? Not cat's guts, which some people call them, but lamb's or sheep's guts, dried in thin strips, and twisted round. The base has a rounded sound hole for access to strings and increased volume. The strings are in the order of the piano keys (7 plus 5) or in the order of the 6-plus-6 system. In the 1500's and onwards the Italians and Spanish both had strong harping traditions. The six-course arrangement gradually gave way to six single strings, and again it seems that the Italians were the driving force. (The six-string guitar can thus be said to be a development of the twelve-string, rather than vice versa, as is usually assumed.) In the transition from five courses to six single strings, it seems that at least some existing five-course instruments were modified to the new stringing pattern.

The fundamental tone or frequency of a string is given by the equation: where f is the frequency of vibration, L is the length of the sting, T is the tension in the string, and μ [Greek letter mu] is the linear density of the string — the mass per unit length of string. Take a look at the slim design Voyageur II, 48 strings (double strung), and the latest creation, the Sidewinder 33. It has 5-inch removable legs and nestles into the base of the harp, attaching in seconds with the twist of a knob and without turning the harp upside down (view video of stand assembly). 8-inch legs are an option for those who prefer more height.

As you continue turning, the string will tend to have a more compact winding, and not coil quickly toward the neck 5. So there is one C (or maybe a C–sharp) string, one D (or maybe a D–sharp) string, and so forth. As with other stringed instruments, it’s important to understand that if the tuning is not precise, your efforts to play will end up sounding very poor. We have our own service / repair man on call. Playing a tune in the Major Key (D) typically starts on the low “D” string.

Materials: The neck, bowl, nut, bridge, and end pin are sheesham. The harp is also traditionally used on the flag of Leinster. Their harps and CD's can be ordered directly online. There should be a minimum, of 1/8 inch between the string and the end of the disk pins. Please check my calendar to see if your area is listed. The double harp (see Laurie Riley's video on this too) has two rows of parallel strings and can be made to play chromatic music by tuning one row of strings to the chromatic scale, while tuning the other one to the diatonic scale.

If you're struggling to learn it from the diagrams in the guide, the videos below might be helpful. For tuning, I prefer to use an electronic tuner. With 33 strings, the Silhouette has an impressive range from 1st Octave G to 6th Octave C. A local music store grew very fond of the high quality hand made strings the two brothers produced, and made them an offer to help expand. Solid Walnut or Cherry wood is used for the structural frame and pinblock, with plywood side and back panels.

I became interested in them after seeing a programme on TV about some of the palaces in Granada where they had many water features and Æolian Harps. I've played it in many settings: Hospice unit at the VA hospital, Chemo Infusion center, Home of the Innocence (disabled children), school programs, and of course in my teaching studio, where my students are also enjoying it. These include the piano, the clavichord, and the harpsichord. Click on the harp for price, Approximately ten years ago I purchased a Marini Made Harp.

In the Baroque orchestra from the 1600s-1750 (or with modern groups playing early music ) harpsichord is almost always used to play the basso continuo part (the written-out bass line and improvised chords), and often a theorbo or lute or a pipe organ. With fewer strings and a smaller investment, a lever harp will allow you to get a feel for the instrument without spending an immense amount of money or having to deal with pedals/foot movements. While many variations have been created over the years, modern performers typically choose from three specific types of harps.
